Credit Card Application Rules Cheat Sheet

Before submitting any credit card application, verify your velocity against each issuer's strict approval rules. Avoid unnecessary hard inquiries and maximize your approval probability.

Chase

3 Underwriting Rules

The 5/24 Rule

Strict Hard Cap

Rule: If you have opened 5 or more personal credit cards across ALL banks in the past 24 months, Chase will automatically deny your application.

Applies to virtually all Chase credit cards. Authorized user accounts count toward 5/24 on initial automated review, but can be removed on reconsideration by calling Chase reconsideration (888-270-2127). Most small business cards (from Chase, Amex, Citi, Barclays) do NOT count toward your 5/24 count because they do not report to personal credit bureaus.

Sapphire 48-Month Rule

Family Cap

Rule: You cannot receive a welcome bonus on any Sapphire card (Preferred or Reserve) if you have received a Sapphire bonus in the past 48 months or currently hold one.

To get a new Sapphire bonus after 48 months, you must first downgrade your existing Sapphire to an OG Freedom or Freedom Unlimited, wait 4-7 days for credit systems to clear, and then reapply.

2/30 Velocity Rule

Velocity

Rule: Chase will approve a maximum of 2 cards within a rolling 30-day window.

Applies to both personal and business cards. Exceeding 2 cards in 30 days triggers an automatic denial.

American Express

3 Underwriting Rules

Once in a Lifetime Bonus Rule

Strict Lifetime Rule

Rule: Amex terms state that you are not eligible for a welcome bonus if you have previously held that specific card in your lifetime (historically ~7 years of inactivity can reset it).

Now compounded with 'Family Language Rules': holding or receiving a bonus on a higher-tier card (e.g. Amex Platinum) will disqualify you from receiving bonuses on lower-tier cards in the same family (Amex Gold, Amex Green). Always apply from lowest to highest tier.

Popup Jail (Ineligibility Warning)

Algorithmic Gate

Rule: Amex displays a warning popup before submitting your application stating you are ineligible for the bonus, without impacting your credit score.

Causes include putting low ongoing spend on existing Amex cards, closing cards right after 12 months, or excessive sign-up bonuses. Putting steady daily spend on existing Amex cards is the most reliable way to exit popup jail.

5 Credit Card Limit

Account Cap

Rule: Amex allows you to hold a maximum of 5 revolving consumer/business credit cards simultaneously.

Hybrid charge cards (Platinum, Gold, Green, Business Platinum, Business Gold) do NOT count toward this 5-card limit.

Citi

2 Underwriting Rules

The 8/65 Rule

Velocity

Rule: Citi will only approve 1 card application every 8 days, and a maximum of 2 card applications every 65 days.

For business cards, Citi requires a 95-day waiting period between business applications. Applying outside these intervals results in automatic denial.

48-Month Brand Rules

Family Cap

Rule: You are not eligible for a sign-up bonus on Citi Strata Premier or AAdvantage cards if you have received a bonus on that card within the past 48 months.

Citi Custom Cash currently allows holding multiple cards via product changes (e.g., converting a Double Cash or Premier into a second Custom Cash).

Capital One

3 Underwriting Rules

The 1/6 Rule

Velocity

Rule: Capital One will only approve 1 card (personal or business) every 6 months.

Attempting to apply for a second card within 6 months results in an immediate denial without a credit pull in most cases.

Tri-Bureau Hard Pull

Inquiry Warning

Rule: Capital One pulls all three credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) on every application.

You can freeze one bureau (e.g., Experian or TransUnion) and some applicants still receive approval with two bureaus pulled, but having all three unfrozen is the standard.

Preference for Fewer Open Cards

Underwriting Quirk

Rule: Capital One's algorithm frequently denies applicants with flawless 800+ credit scores who hold dozens of open cards across other banks.

They prioritize cardholders who will carry balances or use the card as their primary everyday payment method.

U.S. Bank

1 Underwriting Rules

Extreme Inquiry Sensitivity (0/6 & 1/12)

Inquiry Sensitive

Rule: U.S. Bank heavily penalizes recent credit inquiries and newly opened accounts on high-end cards like Altitude Reserve and Cash+.

Your best probability of approval is having 0 new accounts or inquiries in the past 6 months, and no more than 1 in the past 12 months on the specific credit bureau they pull in your state.

Bank of America

2 Underwriting Rules

The 2/3/4 Rule

Velocity

Rule: BofA will approve a maximum of 2 new cards in 2 months, 3 cards in 12 months, and 4 cards in 24 months.

Deposit account holders with Bank of America or Merrill Lynch generally experience more lenient underwriting and higher credit lines.

Preferred Rewards Multipliers

Rewards Boost

Rule: Holding $20k to $100k+ in combined deposits/investments at BofA/Merrill boosts credit card rewards by 25% (Gold), 50% (Platinum), or 75% (Platinum Honors).

A 75% boost turns the Customized Cash Rewards 3% category into 5.25%, and the Unlimited Cash Rewards 1.5% into 2.625% flat back everywhere.
